long the treacherous road towards adulthood, we all have goals we set to ourselves in order show that we are able to be self-reliant when it comes to the development of our human beings. These can be epic tasks, like reading the entirety of Emile Zola's Rougon-Macquart cycle as a way to understand the last part of the 19th century French social history. They can also be modest in scale for instance, as in my case, when I placed a lot of effort and energy trying to see the fully uncut version of Sam Rimi's 1981 splat-tacular The Evil Dead.

As a child, I owned (and was awed by) my hands on the 4 Front Video release of the film, which was subject to numerous cuts due to an over-reaction to the BBFC's well-known moral panic regarding"Video Nasties. "Video trash". My memories of the damaged film is vivid and cherished and I was aware that whoever made the cuts had done so in a way where the viewer would know that something juicy had just removed. For instance, the sound would suddenly fall out of time, or the continuity would stall for a short time. I wanted more than anything to know what was between the cuts. I was a child variant of "Sicko" video. Maybe I still am?

I'd love to believe that director-writer Lee Cronin shared this experience, though even the case that he didn't, it's clear from his new movie Evil Dead Rise that he has studied Raimi's opus on that same molecular level. It's declasse to call this a "franchise extension" or it's a "reboot" or even a late "sequel", as it's more an investigation or reconstruction or a reworking that of Raimi's original. The same story told from a fresh modern perspective. And it absolutely slays...

If there's one thing the Evil Dead has taught us, it's that we must do everything in our power to avoid intoning a mystical demonic incantation in the presence of the flesh-bound/blood-inked Book of the Dead, as very bad things will ensue. In this case, Alyssa Sutherland's single-mom tattooist Elle is preparing to leave her dilapidated apartment block with her three kids. A seismic tremor reveals a dusty basement vault inside which, wrapped in a parchment and held inside a bug-infested tomb is a familiar face.

Cronin is able to balance the setup chaos perfectly, playing out the fractured family dynamic while adding in the element of wild card in Elle's estranged sister Beth (Lily Sullivan) as well as leaving the audience to wonder which sister will end up being an Ash character in the film. This simple but highly effective set-up helps to support the second-half gore blast with a touch of sadness, and I'll admit there's one simple shot that occurs immediately after one of the most visceral effects blow-outs that near made me cry. eye.

Although there is a touching tribute to this film Cronin isn't merely attempting to imitate the hilarious dynamics and acrobatic camera moves that Raimi has made his famous. The dispatching of victims is carried out with the same care for the finer details, and an eagerness to give each victim an entirely new canvas to create horrific mutilation or some other. In tone, Evil Dead Rise is more like the first Evil Dead, in that it doesn't opt for the slapstick wigs that were featured in the third and second films, even though its absurd humor is evident in the way it shows how consistently OTT the entire film is.

The only criticism I have is the tacked-on and pointless prologue and epilogue which feel like they've been added in order to create an opening for a sequel. I suppose it's more a matter of Cronin becoming a one of those who has been a victim to his success. In any case, it delivers the euphoric and cleansing hit of allowing a bloody tsunami to crash over you. It doesn't make you want to revisit the original film to discover what could have been, instead, it serves as a means to test the depth and quality of the work Cronin and his team has accomplished. It's like experiencing the full glory of the uncut initial version of the film for the first, and I can't be more pleased with that.

Evil Dead Rise stream  in the Evil Dead saga is definitely an all-family affair However, until the Necronomicon is destroyed once and for all and for all, there will be very little of families left. Fandango has released a brand new Evil Dead Rise clip that features Alyssa Sutherland's Ellie shortly after she falls victim to the book's curse , and turns into a murderous Deadite. The scene via via Twitter below.

The video shows Ellie's younger sibling, Beth (Lily the Sullivan) discovering her sister in the kitchen. She's cooking up a not-so-nutritious breakfast by smashing a variety of eggs into a fry pan, with shells and everything else. And if this isn't enough to make Beth and Ellie's three children see that something's amiss, the message is clear as Ellie shares with them her ideal family gathering. But it's more violent than the typical trek through the woods and her slurred speech makes the experience even more frightening.
